We read Adam Smith¡¯s The Wealth of Nations mainly from the perspective of political economy to look at his laissez-faire theory. However, Smith¡¯s The Wealth of Nations is also a valuable text from an educational point of view. In particular, Smith developed the theory of education reform in ¡®a remarkable chapter¡¯ in Book V of The Wealth of Nations, which emphasizes freedom and competition, based on self-love by applying his ¡®natural system of freedom¡¯ to the field of education. History best remembers Smith as an 18th-century classical economist who was an advocate of the free-market principle, but I hope that by shedding light on the educational ideas Smith proposed in The Wealth of Nations, I can enhance Smith¡¯s status as an educational reformer, which has been undervalued.
